THE REAL PROBLEM

Where Contractor Google Ads Budgets Go to Waste

Most contractors don't have a Google Ads problem. They have a waste problem. Here's where the money actually goes.

The 5 Biggest Sources of Wasted Ad Spend

We've audited hundreds of contractor Google Ads accounts. The same 5 problems show up in nearly every one:

  1. Broad match keywords running unchecked. Google matches your ads to searches that have nothing to do with your business. An HVAC company bidding on "AC repair" gets matched to "AC repair DIY tutorial" and "AC repair technician jobs hiring." Every click costs you money. Zero of those clicks book a job.
  2. No negative keyword lists. Without negative keywords, you're paying for searches like "free," "DIY," "salary," "jobs," and "complaints." A plumber spending $3,000/month without negative keywords can burn $600-$900 on searches that will never convert.
  3. Homepage as landing page. Sending paid traffic to your homepage forces the visitor to figure out what to do next. Dedicated landing pages with a single call to action convert 2-3x better than a homepage. Every click that bounces is wasted budget.
  4. No call tracking. If you can't see which keywords produce phone calls, you're flying blind. You keep funding keywords that generate clicks but never ring your phone.
  5. Generic ad copy. Ads that say "Quality Service, Call Today" compete with every other contractor using the same lazy template. Specific, trade-relevant copy with a clear offer pulls more clicks from the right people and fewer from tire-kickers.

Average Waste Rates by Trade

Not every trade wastes the same amount. Some industries have more irrelevant search traffic, higher CPCs, and more competitive auctions. Here are the averages we see across managed accounts:

  • HVAC: 38-45% waste rate. High CPC and heavy DIY search volume drive most of the waste.
  • Plumbing: 42-50% waste rate. "Plumber near me" pulls in everything from job seekers to DIY drain cleaners.
  • Roofing: 35-42% waste rate. Lower waste percentage, but the highest CPCs in home services make every wasted click expensive.
  • Tree Service: 30-38% waste rate. Lower competition means less waste, but geographic targeting issues still bleed budget.
  • Electrical: 40-48% waste rate. "Electrician" triggers job-seeker and licensing searches that eat budget fast.
  • General Contractor: 45-55% waste rate. The broadest keyword set means the most irrelevant traffic.

How to Cut Your Waste Rate in Half

The fix isn't complicated. It just requires discipline and weekly attention:

  • Switch to exact match and phrase match keywords. Stop letting Google decide what your ads match to. Control the search terms you pay for.
  • Build dedicated landing pages for each service. "AC Repair in [City]" should land on a page about AC repair with a phone number and form, not your homepage.
  • Add a negative keyword list on day one and update it weekly. Review your Search Terms Report every Monday. Block anything that isn't a real customer looking for your service.
  • Install conversion tracking and call tracking. If you can't measure which keywords produce booked jobs, you can't cut the losers.

When Google Ads Waste Becomes a Bigger Problem

Here's the trap: most contractors respond to poor results by spending more. They throw another $1,000/month at the campaign hoping to see more calls. But scaling a broken campaign just scales the waste. If you're wasting 45% at $3,000/month, bumping to $5,000/month means you're now wasting $2,250 instead of $1,350. The percentage stays the same. The dollar amount gets worse. Fix the waste first, then scale.

QUESTIONS

Straight Answers. No Runaround.

How accurate is this calculator?

The calculator uses industry benchmarks across thousands of home service Google Ads accounts. It gives you a solid ballpark. The free audit digs into your actual account and gives you exact numbers.

What counts as "wasted" ad spend?

Any click that had zero chance of becoming a booked job. Clicks from wrong zip codes, irrelevant search terms (like "DIY" or "jobs hiring"), competitor brand searches, and clicks that land on pages with no clear call to action. Real money, zero return.

Do I need to give you access to my Google Ads account?

Not for the calculator. For the free audit, we'll request read-only access so we can give you exact numbers instead of estimates. We can't change anything in your account with read-only access.

Is the audit really free?

Yes. No credit card, no contract, no obligation. We build the report, walk you through it, and let the numbers speak. If you want help fixing the issues, we'll talk about that. If not, you keep the report.

How is Watson & Co. different from other agencies?

We only work with one company per trade in each market. If we're running Google Ads for a plumber in your city, we won't take on another plumber there. Your leads are your leads. No conflicts, no competition from your own agency.
